Dune Buggy History
RTS Enterprises (Funbodies.com) was launched by Tom Stout, a custom buggy builder, in 1997 as sideline of a fiberglass business already in operation for many years under Ray Stout. Fiberglass and buggies had been a part of the owner,s lives since youth during the emergence of the fiberglass buggy in the 1970s. 
RTS buggies and bodies are shipped all over the world, eg. Aruba, St Vincent Island, Jamaica, Dubai, Costa Rica. Until the Cedar Fire of 2003, the business flourished in the back country of San Diego, when both buildings burned to the ground.

Although disheartened, the brothers started over with some help from the SBA and a lot of grit and hard work. RTS emerged out of the ashes in Santee, CA, and flourishes today.
Since that time, RTS has expanded into VW and buggy restoration, engine building, VW repair as licensed by the Bureau of Automotive Repair, and most recently custom upholstery. The Upholstery division does autos, hotrods, buggies, seats for all kinds of machinery, boats, RVs, restaurant and bar booths.
Customers are given the total price for what they want. They save the time to shop for parts. Also, because RTS is able to do it all, customers aren’t caught up in the surprise of escalating costs as they drag their buggy around to various companies for each segment of the building or restoration process.
However, they also have the option of going to other venders for motors, and other parts, or building part or all of it themselves, or just getting it done for them. Right now, many customers are changing out their sand buggies for the street legal option due to gas prices and the change in emission laws for sand buggies in California.
